An Update on the Antigonish Farmers Market Fundraising

antigonish farmers market Andre copy 2

by Michael Dickson

Hello everyone! As much as I enjoy featuring vendors which are the easiest topic to write about (as we have so many amazing vendors and their story tends to write itself), this week I would like to talk about where we are with our fundraising for the new Agriculture Centre.

We currently have $428,163.19 raised towards our goal of $700,000. Which is extremely exciting! Our fundraising expert Andre has really been putting his best foot forward in applying for funding from the right places to help make sure that we can and will reach the goal of $700,000. So to Andre we are extremely grateful.

fundraising goal antigonish farmers market

Andre on top of using his top notch skills to apply for funding, also spends his Saturdays at the Market with a collection jar and the plans for the new building, so if you are interested in having a chat with him he is available every Saturday to give a detailed breakdown of what it is we are working towards and why it is that we need the 700k to put together the best Agriculture Centre that Nova Scotia has seen. We truly will be a hub for local, for healthy foods, for creating new businesses, for bringing an amazing community together, and most importantly in my opinion for showing everyone that you should always shoot for the moon because if you miss you will land among the stars. We are truly going big and the new Agriculture Centre will be a massive push in the right direction of the local movement which is stronger now than it has ever been.

antigonish farmers market Andre copy

The Antigonish Farmers Market is truly in one very unique position to be a hub. First of all, if you look at a map, Antigonish is the perfect location for such an Agriculture Centre. We have customers that shop at the market from all across Nova Scotia, from across Canada, all the way from the USA, and here was one that really shocked me, we have customers that came to our market from Australia! We have a very healthy mix of vendors at the market each and every week. We really have something for everyone, from the best vegetable producers in Nova Scotia, to top notch meat products that can stack up against any grocery store, we have the very best specialty farmers bringing amazing honey products, the best maple syrup and even cosmetic products made from honey, to the very best bakers that bring a delicious blend of fresh baked goods that anyone will love, amazing jewelry that will delight everyone, hand crafted wooden products that will stand the test of time. We have beautiful stained glass that will spice up anyone’s house, T-shirts that support not just a high school students local business, but charity and local artists as well, we have the best of the best liquors, wine and craft beer that you will find in Nova Scotia, we have more different kinds of cooked food at the market that will tickle everyone’s taste buds; from an unique twist on waffles all the way to the ethnic foods from all across the world. Never before in this area could you have come to one place to explore so many different cultures while still supporting the local movement.

antigonish farmers market poster board

The Antigonish Farmers Market is growing leaps and bounds from when it first started in 1995 with only a handful of vendors selling outdoors, to now over 60 unique vendors each and every week. The market is getting very close to moving into a year-round fully functional building that will, yes, have heat in it for the winter! That being said we would not be where we are today without the support of the vendors, the incredible efforts of our board, and last but not least the community that has come together to show everyone that we aren’t just the crop, we are the cream of the crop and we will rise to the top.

antigonish farmers market overhang

As more and more people are approaching me as the manager of the market I feel such an overwhelming sense of pride in the Antigonish Farmers Market. The positive feedback that I keep getting from customers and vendors is the reason why this is the very best job in the world. They say that if you love what you do you won’t work a day and I never truly understood what that meant until I took on this position. With the support we have, there is no doubt that we will continue to grow for years and years to come. This new Agriculture Centre is a prime example of what happens when we all unite under one banner and for that everyone at the market is very grateful.

Antigonish Farmers Market Vendors: Come From Away but Still Local

mom's recipe antigonish farmers market

by Michael Dickson

Hello everyone! It’s been a wild two weeks since my last blog post, but I was very excited to write this one as a lot has happened since. We had our very first Wednesday evening market on August 1st from 4:00 to 7:00pm. The farmer’s breakfast was extremely successful in raising money for our new Agricultural Center.

This summer is certainly going by very quickly. That being said let’s chat about some pretty cool success stories from away that are now Antigonish Local.

Spicy Kitchen

How can you talk success without bringing up Ranjith from the Spicy Kitchen. Ranjith is a regular to the market with a world of amazing food. My personal favorite is his butter chicken which is melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Ranjith’s business has expanded so much due to his overwhelming commitment to producing products of the highest quality. Everything is made from scratch, to his extremely high standard. If you are looking for something spicy and delicious then the Spicy Kitchen is the vendor for you.

Authentic Mom’s Recipe

If you are a regular to our market then you have no doubt noticed the unique products they bring to the market; from delicious Kimchi, to authentic Thai sauce, to some of the best homemade onion rings you will ever get a chance to snack on. They have something for everyone. Well worth stopping by to say hello, meet their family and young children and learn about their culture.

Martin’s Fine Bakery

It’s hard to talk about local without mentioning Martin and Gabi. They are two very special people who are dedicated to bringing the very best from away to Antigonish Local. With sweets that are exceptional, to fresh baked breads, to amazing pizza and tasty sandwiches. No visit to the market is complete without going over to this wonderful vendor and picking up a little something.

Al Zhouri Desserts

Do you have a sweet tooth? Looking for something that is different? Well look no further as the tasty treats that Al Zhouri brings to the market are sure to delight everyone no matter the age or taste buds. Truly unique desserts. If you stop by the market and don’t pick up something here then you are really missing out.

Peace by Chocolate

What is local to you, to me local is roots. Which is why I want to talk about the amazing people at Peace By Chocolate. I have debated over and over what exactly local is for a long time and, to me, you can’t get much more local than Peace by Chocolate. The positives that the family has brought, not only to the market, but to Antigonish as a whole is amazing. Truly a success story that cannot be under-told. We are so proud of where this Syrian family has come from to where they have gotten to and how far they will continue to go. If you have a moment to stop by and hear their story, do it. They embody exactly what local should be and we are blessed to have them at the Antigonish Farmers Market.

At this time I would like to thank everyone that has continued to support the market. Please remember that we will be having a market this coming Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00pm. On Tuesday we will be publishing a list of vendors that will be attending the market, as well as the menus for the attending food vendors. This information will also be available on our Facebook page Antigonish Farmers Market Association, Instagram @Antigonishfarmersmarket and on our website www.antigonishfarmersmarket.ca. Remember we are in full swing of our fundraising campaign for our new Agricultural Center. Every dollar counts and Thank you everyone for your support!

Looking forward to seeing you all this Wednesday and the following Saturday at the market.

Happy shopping folks!

Wednesday Evening Farmers Market & Thursday Farmers Breakfast in Antigonish

pancakes Casey's

by Michael Dickson

Hello there everyone! This week coming up with a blog topic was a little easier than I’m use to. With all the excitement coming from the special Olympics, the Antigonish Farmers Market decided to put our best foot forward to show our new guests exactly how amazing our local community is.

What have we done to step up our game? Well first and foremost is the decision to move ahead with our first ever Wednesday evening market!

Wednesday Evening Farmers Market: August 1st, 4:00pm to 7:00pm

We will be launching our first evening market on August 1st from 4:00 to 7:00pm. The opening comes with a large list of regular vendors as well as some new and exciting vendors that will be released in short order. This market will run every second Wednesday after that, with the exception of August 29th due to it being 4-H Day at the Antigonish Exhibition Grounds which, believe me, is well worth checking out!

It will be a great opportunity to come out pick up your mid week veggies, check out our fresh baked products, grab some supper on your way home or to check out extremely talented crafted work. This is truly an exciting time for our market and vendors as the market has truly outgrown our current size, and expansion has to happen sooner rather than later. With that being said, this expansion would not be possible without the support from the Board of the Antigonish Farmers Market, our exceptional vendors and even more importantly than that, you, the people that support our vendors and our market. Without you there would be no Antigonish Farmers Market. So for that, we all say THANK YOU!

antigonish farmers market vegetables

Thursday Farmers Breakfast: August 2nd, 6:30am to 9:00am

With the expansion coming sooner rather than later we have kicked up our fund raising efforts into overdrive. We have been advertising and prepping for a great old-fashioned home-cooked Farmers Breakfast and when I say Farmers Breakfast I mean… WOW… featuring Casey’s world famous pancakes, homemade blueberry sauce from Antigonish local blueberries, delicious honey butter and amazing maple syrup produced locally. Delicious sausages, toast, tea, coffee, orange juice, chocolate milk, and milk.

Breakfast costs $10 for the full farm breakfast and $5 for the kids’ size farm breakfast. All money generated from the breakfast will go right into the fundraising for our new barn. This is an amazing cause to support local and help improve the state of local agriculture in a huge way. The new Agricultural Center is going to have a profound impact not only on the Farmers’ Market with a larger building for more amazing vendors, but there will also be an available commercial kitchen for community use. It will serve as a incubator for all kinds of new small businesses. Antigonish will become a beacon for showing all of Nova Scotia exactly what happens when a community comes together and supports our growing economy. The impact is going to be something that will be felt for years to come and for that, we at the Antigonish Farmers Market are so grateful to the community.

If you are interested in becoming a vendor at our Wednesday market please reach out to me, the market manager, Michael Dickson via our website www.antigonishfarmersmarket.ca, by email at Manager@Antigonishfarmersmarket.ca or by calling 902.867.7479.

As always thank you to everyone who reads this blog, thank you for taking time out of your week to stay up to date on our current happenings at the market. Make sure to check us out online at www.antigonishfarmersmarket.ca and on Facebook at Antigonish Farmers Market Association and on Instagram @Antigonishfarmersmarket. Thank you for your continued support!

Looking forward to seeing everyone out for our first Wednesday Night Market on August 1st from 4:00-7:00pm and for our August 2nd Farmers Breakfast starting at 6:30am.

Antigonish Farmers Market Families

wild flour bakery country parent 2 copy

by Michael Dickson

Hello everyone! Its been a busy two weeks for the Antigonish Farmers Market. Last weekend involved a lot of work leading into the market for your favorite market manager, but made for a fun work week overall.  Busy weeks take up a lot of my time which results in a not-so-exciting summer week for my family. Consequently, I came up with a pretty good topic for this week’s blog. This week we get focus on some of the Antigonish Farmers Market’s families. We are a family friendly market that has a little bit of something for every member of the family. Why is that? Because the market is made up of some pretty amazing families. So lets talk about a few of them:

Martin’s Fine Bakery

Martin and Gabrielle are all about family, with a strong moral code, a passion for high quality delicious breads, sweets, pizza and the most amazing cakes you will ever eat. It is hard to not think of them in an extremely positive light. Not only are they very knowledgeable in the art of making delicious treats and breads, they also have a passion for training the up-and-comers as they have been bringing in a breathe of youth that greatly encourages succession planning in a way that anyone would be proud of.

The Cornect Family

How can we talk about family at the market without mentioning the Cornect’s? We see them at the market every week. Margaret and Amanda are huge supporters of the market. Margaret for more reasons than I can fit in, does so much for the market: from being a board member and a vendor, to a knowledge source for the Market Manager. Her dedication is unwavering. Amanda is not only a vendor at the market, but she is also a behind the scenes worker that helps manage the financial health of the market completely on her own time! Of course we cannot forget about Ben who most don’t get to see, but he leaves his finger prints all over the Market; with homemade book cases that are used by many vendor, to the farm work he does to take care of the bees. Of course last but not least we cannot forget about Crispin. Crispin is the owner of the Simply Ducky business, which contributions can be found all over the market; from business cards, to advertising signage that is all over the barn and road ways, to maintenance of the Antigonish Farmer’s Market website. Crispin’s charitable donations are large in cost and time. Thank you all for everything you do!

The Broussard’s Family: The Wild Flour Bakery and the Rusty Kicker

As I rack my brain with thoughts of what I can write about the Broussard’s that will do just cause to them, it is hard to filter it down because the family friendly feeling that they inspire in the market is overwhelming. As a true example of how close a family can be, they bring a positive attitude to the market every single week and a commitment to deliciousness that is unparalleled. From fun chats about the things that are going on in the world to why cupcakes are not just a tasty treat but are filled with a love that cannot be matched. They are a shining example of commitment to family. The life skills that are getting handed down are exceptional. Lets not get to absorbed in the cupcakes though because you cannot have dessert without the main course and you will be hard pressed to find a burrito that comes even close to the deliciousness of the ones they make. With a little something for everybody, a trip to the market is not complete until you stop by and sample a little piece of heaven that the Broussard’s bring to the market.

All About Family Fundraiser

I don’t know about everyone else but my day starts with breakfast at the kitchen table with my wife and two daughters before we all get into the tasks of the day. With that being said the Antigonish Farmers Market is hosting a Farmers Breakfast at the Barn on Thursday, August 2nd from 6:30am to 9:00am. We are offering Casey’s homemade famous pancakes with your choice of a homemade blueberry sauce, delicious maple syrup, amazing honey butter, sausages, baked beans, toast, hot and cold beverages! All profits from this fundraiser will go towards the building of the new Antigonish Farmers Market Building.

Well folks that wraps up my writing, I hope you enjoy what you read and that you continue to support the Antigonish Farmers Market and our wonderful vendors. My family and I certainly enjoy feeling so welcomed into this awesome environment. Remember to check us out online at www.antigonishfarmersmarket.ca, on Facebook: Antigonish Farmers Market Association and Instagram: @Antigonishfarmersmarket.

Thank you for your continued support of the Market and our Vendors!

Antigonish Farmers Market Food Vendors

waffle bus country parent 2 copy

by Michael Dickson

Hello everyone! It’s been a long two weeks since I last wrote during which I’ve had a lot of thoughts pop into my head and so I figured moving into the summer season we would put some focus on something that I truly believe helps bring people together: Food.

I am going to take this opportunity to talk about a field that has grown a lot in a short time with exciting new vendors as well as inspiring vendors who have been here for a while and who keep bringing back products of the highest quality. So fear not, if you are hungry the Antigonish Farmers Market has more than got you covered!

Back East Seafood

Back East Seafood is a new vendor at our market and is a new business just getting its legs under it. The vendors come to the market from here in Antigonish and as their name speaks they are all about the deliciousness that is seafood. When I was in the Arctic one of the few things that I missed was high quality delicious seafood. That is exactly what Back East Seafood brings to the market. Two of my favorite dishes there is the Lobster Poutine which is truly sinfully delicious and the Back East Fish & Chips. Very delicious and filling meals. If you are a seafood lover this is the place for you eat! Combine the food with the amazing people that run the truck and they have all the tools for success.

Spicy Kitchen

If you want to talk about food bringing people together, then this is a vendor that brings people together with authentic spicy food. They offer authentic Indian, Chinese, Thai, Korean and East Asian Food! Ranjith comes to the market every week bringing delicious foods that people can sample. Walking away from the Spicy Kitchen is a very hard thing to do. Ranjith’s passion for providing not only an authentic experience but a filling one as well makes him one of the most popular vendors at the market. As a lover of spicy food their Butter Chicken dish is hands down one of my favorite things to eat! Spicy Kitchen is a growing vendor with a lot of passion for local. Make sure to stop by and say hello on Saturday to one of the biggest supporters of the Antigonish Farmers Market.

The Waffle Bus Stop

Do we even really need to talk about the Waffle Bus? Is there anything I can say that you don’t already know? I doubt it. Not just a staple in Antigonish they wave the flag of local first very high. I still remember the first time I went to eat there. It was a Saturday morning and I thought ‘yeah, I could go for a waffle or two for breakfast’. Well, was I in for a shock. I ordered the steak sandwich that was just melt-in-your-mouth delicious! The passion that they bring to work everyday is amazing. The unique creations that they have for sale at the bus on Saturday mornings is something to behold. I would suggest that it is well worth getting up early to get breakfast at the Market, but don’t just take my word for it come see for yourself.

Food Matters

Fresh Food Matters brings a wide variety of products to the market and beyond every week. If you are looking for a light snack, Angela’s Hummus is the best you will find. If you are looking for a delicious lunch, she offers salads of a wide variety, homemade soups, and a lot of take home foods that are an amazing option for a healthy home cooked meal without all the hassle of cooking. Good portion sizes with high quality ingredients make Food Matters one of the best options for something tasty to eat. Mix all the deliciousness together with one of the coolest personalities, Angela is a must visit vendor at the Antigonish Farmers Market.

The Rolling Bricks

One of the things that everyone talks about living in the East Coast is the best pizza. There isn’t a place in my opinion that comes close to matching the talent that the East Coast has for pizza. As such it is not as easy to find success in which is exactly what The Rolling Bricks has done. They offer not only one of the best pizza’s you will ever have but an experience that most find extremely cool to watch. They make the pizza right in front of you and cook it in a hand crafted wood fire brick oven that adds a flavor to the pizza that cannot be matched! One of the more unique vendors to attend our market.

the rolling bricks country parent

If  you are looking for something tasty to eat anyone of these vendors will leave you more than satisfied with the food selections they bring to the market. As a growing market we are always looking for new and fun vendors to bring something unique to the market. We are very grateful to have such an amazing group of food vendors that care not only for the people that they serve but also for the product they put out. A trip to the market cannot be complete without pulling up a seat and having a taste of what the market has to offer!

That’s all that I have for this week. We look forward to seeing everyone out and about at the Market. Thank you for your continued support of the Antigonish Farmers Market and the Local Movement that matters now more than ever!

Happy shopping everyone!

Antigonish Farmers Market Produce Growers

overmars gardens country parent copy

by Michael Dickson

I have a few thoughts that have popped into my head since my last blog and I was thinking this is a great chance for me to get them out there. It’s been a very rough June for the produce growers at the Antigonish Farmers Market due to the overwhelming amount of frost that they have had to deal with. It takes a ton of work to recover from the amount of damage that mother nature has dealt out to our farmers, which is why the Farmers of the market are the focus point for my blog post this week.

Why is it so important that we continue to support the farmers during this trying time? The question pretty much answers itself to be honest but here it is: The amount of money that is being lost due to these frosts is huge. It directly impacts the farmers ability to make a living, which of course directly impacts our community as we are losing out on the high quality fresh local foods that we love to eat! So make sure you get out to show your support to our local farmers at the Antigonish Farmers Market.

To this end, I would like to highlight the primary producers of the Market:

Casey’s Vegetables

Casey’s farm is a huge supporter of the Market, from being one of the most popular vendors that we have, Casey brings a wide variety of products to the market every year and Casey himself has been at the market for over 8 years, he is well known and he is a man of the people, so make sure to stop by the market and say hello to the team.

Penner Family Farm

Leonard Penner and his family farm are a growing vendor at the market. They consistently bring a wide selection of fresh produce to the market and nothing seems to dampen the spirits of Leonard or his kids as they sell outside the market barn in the rain or sunshine! The dedication to the local lifestyle is unwavering and as a result the support for his farm and products is overwhelming.

Lochaber Growers Cooperative

It’s very hard to talk about amazing personality without bringing Bonnie into the conversation. Bonnie is at the market representing the Lochaber Cooperative every weekend with a positive attitude, a great smile and a commitment to freshness, and serving our community. The Cooperative is made up of an amazing group of farmers that bring a little bit of everything to the market which results in a very impressive selection of great farm fresh foods.

It is impossible to discuss producers at the market without including the Forever Green Farm. They are one of the largest producers that the market has. With a massive selection of meats and vegetables, which continue to make them one of the most popular vendors that we have at the Market. They cook at the market every weekend and the smell of their farm fresh foods cooking on the grill is enough to make anyone hungry! Well worth stopping by to say hello to and pick up some delicious farm fresh food.
